Britney Spears was charged on Friday with hit and run and driving without a valid license, a spokesman with the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office said.
The 25-year-old singer was charged with one count of hit and run causing property damage and one count of driving without a valid California driver's license, both misdemeanors.
The charges, which each carry a maximum penalty of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine, stem from an incident in a private parking lot in the San Fernando Valley on August 6.
Spears is accused of hitting a parked car and driving away.
The victim filed an accident report on August 9 at the North Hollywood Community Police Station.
The city attorney's office did not know whether Spears' car had been damaged, nor did he know the extent of damage to the other car, spokesman Frank Mateljan said. He also did not know who else, if anyone, was in the car with Spears.
Representatives for the singer were not immediately available for comment.
Spears was sent a letter on Friday, notifying her of the charges. A hearing, which Spears does not have to attend because the charges are misdemeanors, is set for October 10, Mateljan said.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey that aired Wednesday, the talk-show host asked him point-blank: "What do you think is going on with Britney?"
Timberlake, 26, replied: "I don't know, to be honest with you."
Spears and Timberlake first met in the Mickey Mouse Club and later dated until March 2002. It's rumoured Timberlake's bitter break-up song, "Cry Me a River," was written about Spears.
"I haven't spoken to her in years," said Timberlake. "There's no ill will. I have nothing but love for her."
"It's funny because we dated each other at a time," he added. "Wow, I haven't talked about this in a long time, this is interesting."
In the past year, Britney has shaved her head, attacked photographers with an umbrella and given a widely ridiculed performance at the MTV Music Video Awards.
Her new single, "Gimme More," was supposed to signal her grand comeback. Instead, it debuted at Number 85 on the Billboard Hot 100 list, before slowly rising up 10 spots.
Producer Timbaland -- who has enjoyed several hit singles with Timberlake, including "Cry Me a River" -- has said he won't work with Spears again because she's become too "big-headed."
Spears is also currently fighting for control of her two sons -- Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1 -- in a custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline.
A California judge presiding over the case has slammed Spears, 25, for her apparent heavy drinking and drug use.
In court documents obtained by celebrity gossip website TMZ.com Tuesday, Gordon concludes "there is a habitual, frequent, and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol by (Spears)."
Spears now has to undergo twice-weekly drug and alcohol testing, and talk to a parenting coach who will observe how she interacts with her children.
Lawyer Gloria Allred, who represents a former bodyguard of Spears who gave a written declaration about the pop star's odd behaviour, said the judge didn't go far enough.
"I think, if he thought she really had a substance abuse issue, he should have taken away custody until such time that she could prove she was no longer using alcohol and or substances," Allred told CTV Newsnet.
"I think it also would have given her more incentive to get the help she needs."

Things just keep getting more complicated for Britney Spears.
The judge in Spears' custody case has some serious concerns about Spears:
"Based on the evidence presented, the court finds that there is a habitual, frequent and continuous use of controlled substances and alcohol" by Spears, Superior Court Judge Scott M. Gordon said in court documents, according to the Associated Press.
So, Gordon has ordered Spears to take two random drug and alcohol tests a week.
Don't think Spears ex-hubby Kevin Federline escaped Gordon's restrictions. Both he and Spears are to refrain from drinking or taking any drugs when around their children and 12 hours before seeing the kids.
See a coach - Spears must meet with a parenting coach for eight hours a week. The coach will "observe and report back to the court about her parenting skills," the AP said.
Be nice - Spears and K-Fed are not to make "derogatory remarks" about each other in front of the children.
No spanking - They can't use "corporal punishment" on the boys.
Go to class - They both have to complete "Parenting Without Conflict," a class offered by the court.

She regularly tops Hollywood's best dressed list but Angelina Jolie has abandoned clothes all together for her latest movie.
In scenes sure to set pulses racing, the much lusted-after star emerges from a lake completely naked except for dripping gold liquid.
For the adult fantasy film Beowulf, Jolie plays the mother of Grendel the monster, who is the father of all evil from Anglo-Saxon mythology.
In her transformation for the role, the actress appears to have regained her famous knock-out curves, perhaps with a little digital assistance.
Filmed in a photo-realistic animation style, the release has been described by the Los Angeles Times as a "hyper violent and highly sexualized tale".
Jolie stars alongside British actors Ray Winston, who plays her evil son, and Sir Anthony Hopkins who plays King Hrothgar.
With Beowulf set to hit cinemas in the UK on November 16, the actress has already started work on her next project, the action movie Wanted.
The 32-year-old, who lost a considerable amount of weight following the death of her mother earlier this year, has welcomed the return to action films.
She said: "It seemed like a good thing for me – and my family agreed – to have a reason to get strong and do something that was not serious."
Away from the big screen, Angelina and her partner Brad Pitt are preparing to add to their brood, which already includes Maddox, 6, Pax, 3, Zahara, 2, and Shiloh, 1.
When asked at the Venice Film Festival if they were ready for another child, Pitt answered: "Yeah, we're ready."

Lindsay Lohan finally got a visit from her dad, Michael Lohan.
Dina confirmed the reunion saying, "Lindsay, myself and my son, Michael Jr., agreed that it would be good for her to have some closure with the situation with her dad. It's part of the healing process." Closure? Does she know she opened a new bag of worms?
As for Dina being happy for the meeting she said, "I am. I wanted it to happen for Lindsay…She needed to do this for herself. It's still her father, no matter how you slice it. It's still her dad, and God willing he'll get it."
I bet you Dina has every single media outlets number on speed dial and when stuff like this happen she is all over the place texting and emailing.

Britney Spears will give her first major public performance in three years on Sunday in the latest step on the pop diva's comeback from personal problems, a statement said.
Spears, 25, will be the opening act in a star-studded MTV Video Music Awards, appearing on stage at a large-scale event for the first time since the birth of her two children, an MTV statement said.
The appearance comes as Spears prepares to release her new album in November following a troubled 12 months that has seen her divorce from husband Kevin Federline and also be admitted to rehab.
Spears, who for five years was the top-earning singer in the world until she was overtaken by Madonna, has made headlines for bizarre and erratic behavior ever since her split with Federline.
She was photographed partying hard in Los Angeles and Las Vegas -- often pantyless -- and bizarrely shaved her head in February shortly before entering a rehabilitation clinic.
Spears has played a handful of low-key concerts at nightclubs in recent months but has not given any major gigs.
